Alice Anthony, Mitzi, Joel, and Charles Aron at Graceland 2005

Alice Anthony is a graduate of the University of Memphis (B.S.) and East Tennessee State University (M.F.A.).  She is an Assistant Professor of Art and Communications (Photography) at Milligan College.  She has had group and solos exhibitions in over 10 states and was a featured artist at the Tennessee Art Commission Gallery in the summer of 2003.  Her work has been published in Now and Then, Photo Review and Southern Exposure.  She has been photographing the fans at Graceland for the past ten years.  Her exhibition of this work “Gone But Not Forgotten” has recently been on display in Memphis and is now at the Tunica Museum in Mississippi.

 

Ericka Basile, The Candyman Makes the World Taste Good

Ericka is an artist currently living and working in Johnson City.  She serves as President of the student Painting & Drawing Association at ETSU.  She works in drawing, painting and mixed media while also acting as designer and creative director for handbags “Hey, suki!”  She can be reached at ericka@heysuki.com.

Bobby C. Baxley, Cowan Lane

Bobby C. Baxley is a local artist in Morristown, TN.  He is a member and vice president of the Morristown Art Association.  He occasionally volunteers for art projects in local schools system and at the Rose Center Museum.  His work is mostly done in pastel and acrylic, but he also works with watercolor oil, oil pastel, pencil and scratchboard.  His art is displayed at Aesthetic Considerations in Morristown.  His studio, Countryside Gallery, is in his home where you can contact him or his wife, Patricia at 423-586-4743.

Georgie S. Bemis, Wildflowers

Georgie Bemis was born in New Mexico and raised in Tennessee.  She returned to New Mexico in 1990 to learn more about painting and began working in pastels.  Georgie is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the Pastel Society of New Mexico and teaches pastel workshops throughout the U.S. including the Taos Institute of Art in Taos, NM.  She has won numerous awards at national and international shows and has work represented at the Liz-Beth Gallery in Knoxville and Framing Concepts in New Mexico.  Other examples of Georgie Bemis’ artwork may be viewed on her website: www.artbygeorgie.com  

Paul Bishop, The Hulk’s Girlfriend

Paul Bishop is a professional portrait and wedding photographer.  He enjoys creating images that invite people to make up the “rest of the story” when encountering his work. Special interest is photographing people and finding that special something that makes each person unique. He is principal in the new fine art portrait studio, Studio 5 Zero 1, in downtown Kingsport. He began developing black and white film and printing the images in his darkroom over thirty-five years ago.  Now his equipment is state of the art, but his roots show that he most enjoys producing a well-crafted, crisp, simple image.  His work may be seen at www.studio5zero1.com.

Carole Farris Blevins, Autumn

Carole Farris Blevins is a full-time artist, working mainly in watercolor, with a studio in Bristol, TN.  She teaches watercolor classes at William King Regional Arts Center in Abingdon, VA.  Her paintings are in many private and corporate collections.  Examples of her artwork may be viewed on her website: www.twoartist.com and in the New Light Gallery in Abingdon, VA. 

Bonnie Boochard, Twiga II

Bonnie Boochard was born and raised in Michigan and moved to Kingsport with her family in 1991.  She completed her BFA and MFA at ETSU where she occasionally teaches as adjunct faculty.  She works out of a studio next to her home near Fall Branch. Deborah Bryan, Seed Drupes

Deborah Bryan received her MFA in Printmaking from ETSU in 2000, and since then has operated Rockhouse Printmaking Studio, specializing in etching, relief printmaking, and monotypes.  She is adjunct faculty in the Department of Art and Design at ETSU, teaching printmaking, 2D design, and book arts.  Born in Ohio, she moved to Johnson City with her husband ten years ago and considers herself settled in East Tennessee.  She participated in juried national and international exhibitions, and her work is included in numerous museum, university, and private collections in the US and abroad.  Individuals interested in her work should contact her at 928-5313.

Linda H. Bryant, Temptation, According to Eve

Linda Bryant has a Masters of Studio Art from Marshall University, Huntington, WV, with a major in ceramics. She completed Metal Smith at Haywood Community College, Clyde, NC and also at ETSU and Marshall University.  She maintains Stone’s Throw Studio in Jonesborough, TN where she has a pottery studio, and makes jewelry using silver and bronze metals.  She also has an interest in painting and mixed media printmaking. Charles Caudle has recently retired and is focusing his artistic energies through a lifetime interest in photography.  His desire is to capture the world in which we live and travel in a manner that brings the viewer to thought and an understanding of the moment.

John Charles, Ruler of the Roost

John Charles was born in Hawkins County and grew up on a farm near Baileyton .One of his calming rituals was feeding the animals.  It also taught him about cause and effect, well-feed chickens yield lots of eggs.  He graduated from ETSU with a BA in Fine Arts.  He then moved to California to pursue art and run John Charles Gallery and frame making shop.   Two kids and two wives later he created a little painting called Ruler of the Roost which is his lifelong self-portrait.  To learn more about John you can visit his website johncharlesartist.com.  His art can also be seen or purchased at Pearl Gallery in Jonesborough.

Shirley P. Cloyd, The Square, San Miguel

Shirley Cloyd received her MA degree in psychology from ETSU in 1981and practiced as a family therapist until 1996.  She has been a painter throughout her life and has studied with her friend and mentor, Coralie Tweed, since the early 1970’s.  Shirley works out of her studio at home, which looks out on Buffalo Mountain.

Kenton Coe, Ian’s Aria

Kenton Coe is a native Tennessee composer.  His opera “South” was successfully premiered by the Opera of Marseilles and remains the only American opera produced by the Paris Opera.  He has written the scores for all of the Ross Spears documentary films.  He is a recipient of the Tennessee governor’s Artist Award and the Lyndhurst prize.

Piper Noel Christian Colley, Haysi

Piper Noel Christian Colley resides in Haysi, VA. The subject matter that most interests her is fantasy, but she often draws her inspiration from medieval times. A budding artist, Colley also enjoys writing.

Dorothy Cox, Sea Worthy

Dorothy Cox is a retired accountant who loves art and occasionally likes to produce some of her own artwork.  She has exhibited at DKA in Kingsport and Community Artists Exhibition in Bristol.  Dorothy’s subject matter includes portraits, landscapes, and still-life arrangements.  Before she retired, Dorothy worked as the Director of Finance for the Bristol Virginia School System.

Ruth Crowe began painting as a hobby in New Orleans, LA in the early 80’s. She won several awards for her pastel work through the Westbank Art Guild of New Orleans. Sheryl T. Daniels, Sunset Over the Inlet

Sheryl Daniels love of the beauty of God’s creation, and the desire to interpret that beauty through drawing and painting have been major factors in her life since childhood.  Her favorite subjects include landscapes, flowers, and animals.  She works in pastel, watercolor, oil, and pen and ink in a realistic style.  She majored in art at the University of Memphis and has since taken courses from Marcia Leonard, Don Andrews, Alan Flattman, Janet Walsh, Carol Cooper and Mary Todd Beam.  In 2005 her artwork won awards in the Kingsport Art Guild Members Show and the Newell-Hendershot Watermedia Show and was juried into the Virginia Highlands Festival Art Show and the Appalachian Art Show.   She had a pen-and-ink drawing of Tipton-Haynes Historic site exhibited in the White House in 1999. Leslie Davis, Nuts!

Leslie Davis attended Mississippi State College for Women before transferring to ETSU where she earned both a BS and an MA in art.  Since graduating, she has devoted her life to creating art.  Her work has been in shows and exhibits throughout the region.  She has also won several award and participated in numerous workshops, including the Virginia Highlands Festival, Kingsport Art Guild, and Little Switzerland, NC.  Examples of her work can be seen at Hibbert-Davis Coffee Gallery in Kingsport.

Anita DeAngelis, Vertebrae

Anita DeAngelis has been a resident of Johnson City since 1994. She received her BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, her MFA from Arizona State University, and she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.  She is currently an Associate Professor of Art and Associate Dean of the College and Arts and Sciences at ETSU.  She works primarily in drawing, printmaking, and book arts.

John Edwards, Calla Lily

John Edwards has been involved in photography for over 25 years.  After art school he made a living in commercial photography.  He has been involved with his flower project of over 10 years with work in collections throughout the United States.  Through his photographs he hopes to enlighten people with a view of often seen, but overlooked objects in nature. Bohen Ferrari, Greener Pastures

Bohen Ferrari was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her family moved to California and Upstate New York before settling down in the Washington D.C. area. She studied mathematics at UNC Chapel Hill and become a management consultant.  She studied art and architecture at the Catholic University of America in Washington,      D. C. She has no formal art training, but experiments with various media.

Ava C. Hausmann is a native of Corpus Christi, TX. She received a BFA degree from the University of Houston, and has participated in shows in Texas and Germany.  Ava’s work consists of lithographs, etchings, gouaches, and watercolors. Kathy Millhorn Hawk, A Letter of Discipline

Kathy Millhorn Hawk has always tried to be a producing artist during her career as an art educator in the Kingsport City School.  Since retiring she began concentrating more on her own artwork.  After earning a BS and MA from ETSU she studied with various local, national, and internationally known artists pursuing her interest in calligraphy, watercolor, and mixed media.  She continued her long membership with the Kingsport Art Guild of which she has held numerous positions including president twice.  She served as the southeastern region vice-president of the National Art Education Association and she is a member of the Arts Depot.  Her most recent accomplishment was an Award of Distinction during the 2005 Virginia Highlands Festival.  Her paintings are in private collections in the southeast and the west coast and can be seen or purchased at Hibbert-Davis Coffee Gallery, Nelson Fine Art, and Boones Creek Pottery.

Tony Henson, Dream II

Virginia B. Kennedy, Autumn Mountain Landscape, quilted

Virginia Kennedy has been sewing since childhood.  Her love of color and texture in fabrics found expression for years in the clothing she made.  In 1982 a series of classes with Martha Culp kindled a growing passion for quilting and she continues to learn and explore this fabric art.  Landscapes in fabric are a special interest, as well as, traditional pieced and appliquéd quilt designs.  She has a strong interest in textile and quilt history.  Hand quilting is her preference; therefore most of her work is small scale.  She enjoys creating non-quilted par aments for her church.  Virginia and her husband Bill reside in historic Jonesborough.

Dan Kleeman, Cosmogonicon

Dan Kleeman was born in New York City.  He earned a BFA in painting from The Cooper Union School of Art. In 1974, he received an artist fellowship grant in painting from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1990 he graduated from Columbia University, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) with an MA in art history.   Dan has had many exhibitions in many venues including New York City, Provincetown, MA, and Durham, NC.  Since moving to Johnson City in 1996, he has exhibited in several juried shows at ETSU’s Reece Museum and Slocomb Galleries.  A large solo exhibition was held at the Johnson City Area Arts Council in 2001.

Kelly Kriszamer, Between Me & Thee I

Kelly Kriszamer is a graduate of Mississippi University for Women where she earned her MA degree in printmaking.  Although her specialty was photographic serigraphy, she continues her first love – photography and mixed media.  After teaching design, printmaking and photography at Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi for eight years, Kelly relocated to Northeast Tennessee, and she now resides in Erwin.  Kriszamer has continued her post-graduate study at Rochester Institute of Technology and taken workshops with fine art photographers Judy Dater and Ralph Gibson.

Shelia Largo is a multi-media artist whose works include painting, clay handbuilding and sculpture.  She now lives and pursues her art and creativity in the oldest city in our nation, St. Augustine, Florida.

Patti Lawrence earned her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and a MA in teaching from Montclair University in New Jersey.  She has lived and worked in Tennessee for 12 years  and has exhibited her work at Slocomb Gallery, Nelson Fine Art Gallery, The Madison Art Center in Nashville and Main Art Centre in Kingsport.

Claudia Lee is a studio artist, educator, workshop leader, author, freelance designer and technical advisor.  Her work in handmade paper is exhibited widely and can be found in many collections and publications.  She is the owner and operator of Liberty Paper Mill, a working and teaching studio in middle Tennessee.

Kichung Lee Lizeé, Wave

Korean born artist, Kichung Lee Lizeé, has a unique blend of Eastern calligraphy and Western thematic material present in her art. In her work, the living spirit of this Eastern art form comes together with Western forms such as Abstract Expressionism; this fusion aims for a more universal expression than may be possible through working in the individual traditions.  Kichung recently traveled and studied in Korea and Europe.  She was a featured artist at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum in October 2003.  She resides in Butler, TN and Santa Fe, NM.  Other works by Kichung can be seen at www.absolutearts.com/kichunglizee

Jane Martin, educator and artist, has been facilitating art experiences for over 15 years.  Her work fosters her belief that it is the process of being creative that allows us to fully express who we are.  She is adjunct faculty at ETSU teaching Art Therapy I and II in the Department of Human Development and Learning. 

Ellen Martin-Patrick, Two Sides

Ellen Martin-Patrick grew up in East Tennessee.  She received her MFA from ETSU.  She has been teaching art for 28 years in Bristol, TN and believes art has a power to teach on many levels.  Her art is always simple in its use of form.

Joy McGinnis, Mothers Three

Joy McGinnis, a painter of portraits as well as still life and landscape, describes her style as impressionistic to realistic.  Her focus is on light and color.  Since color appears more vibrant in outdoor light, she likes to photograph her subjects in that light in a relaxed setting, where the subject appears unaware that he or she is being photographed. Michael Murphy, 60s Fashion Design (1860)

Michael Murphy is an award winning film photographer.  His photography has won awards and has been published.  His art has been exhibited in many venues including the Reese Museum, Slocomb Gallery, TVA Dogwood Arts Festival, The Art Market, and East TN History Center in Knoxville.  He serves on the statewide advisory committee for visual arts for the TN Arts Commission in Nashville.  He has a BA degree from Carson-Newman College and a Law Degree from the University of Memphis. Mary Nees is a MFA candidate and teaching associate at ETSU’s school of art and design.  She began to explore the excitement of printmaking at the Pennsylvania Academy of fine arts in 2001.  For the last three years she has considered East Tennessee her home and considers it to be the finest place she has ever lived.

Diane R. Nelson, Circle of Life

A native Tennessean, Nelson is Professor Emerita in the Department of Biological Sciences at ETSU.  Although she did not take art classes in school, her mother, Lucretia C. Roddy, a professional artist in Knoxville, instilled the love of art in her.  In an attempt to encourage her mother to resume painting after a stroke, Diane asked her mother to give her one lesson in watercolor.  After her mother’s death shortly after the lesson, Diane enrolled in watercolor workshops during the last 20 years under various artists, including Skip Lawrence, Mary Todd Beam, Eva Carter, and Alex Powers.  She is currently Past-President and Newsletter Editor of the Kingsport Art Guild.  Diane has won awards in several art shows, including the Kingsport Art Guild Members Show, Appalachian Art Show, Tennessee Artists Association, and the First Tennessee Bank Art Show.  Her art may be viewed at Main Art Center Gallery, Kingsport and Hibbert-Davis Coffee Gallery, Kingsport.

Meghan O’Connor, Spoon Fed Control

Meghan O’Connor earned her BFA in Printmaking from ETSU and is a candidate for a MFA in Printmaking at Clemson University.  In her most recent work she has been drawing from images out of her mindShe brings figures associated with childhood into an adult-like environment, creating an out-of-context situation in which there are areas of complexity along with calmness.     

Gail Oliver, In the Tiki Room

Gail Oliver is a multi-media artist from Bristol, TN.  A former newspaper advertising sales and ad design artist, Gail Oliver now owns and operates Artopia Art Supplies in downtown Johnson City. Martin Olsen, Tobacco Farm

Martin Olsen is a Johnson City photographer who is currently experimenting with historic photographic techniques.  The entries this year are Salt Prints taken with vintage cameras.  William Henry Fox Talbot originally developed the Salt Print method of processing in the 1840’s.

Kristy Moeller Ottinger, Untitled on Silk

Kristy Moeller Ottinger is a painter and art quilter.  She is an adjunct teacher for Tusculum College and also teaches an after school program for children called Art Quest through Greeneville Arts Council.    She received a MFA from ETSU in 1994 and has studied in Ireland.  She works on the theme of healing leaves from the tree of life series.  Her artwork can be seen at the Centre at Millennium Park.

Neli Ouzounova, untitled

Neli Ouzounova is a native of Bulgaria.  She received her BFA from Western Kentucky University and her MFA from ETSU.  She has been a part-time foundations instructor at ETSU’s Department of Art & Design for a few years.  She was also given the opportunity to be the JCAAC’s first teaching artist for Arts Corps during 2005.  Neli has presented lectures, given lessons, exhibited paintings and made works upon commission during the time she spent in Johnson City.  Neli’s paintings deal with personal experiences from interaction and adjustment to people and issues in her surroundings.  She uses printmaking, collage and various paint applications on the 2-dimensional surface of the canvas.  In her work Neli says she focuses on bringing together elements from different cultures and various time periods to layer a subtle, though vibrant, visual poetry.  To contact her, email ouzouni@hotmail.com.

Barbara Powell, Oriental Spring

A resident of Johnson City, Barbara Powell holds a BA degree in music education and a minor in art from Eastern Kentucky State College.  Her art works have been juried into the 2003 and 2004 Appalachian Art Show, the 2004 First Tennessee Bank Art Show and the Virginia Highlands Art Show.  Barbara was one of six artists who participated at the Gallery Show at Nelson’s Fine Art Gallery in September 2005.  She is a member of the Kingsport Art Guild.

Art S. Powers, God’s New Day

Art Powers currently is publisher of the Johnson City Press. He and his wife are former owners of Powers Publications, Inc., publishers of Watauga Democrat (Boone), The Blowing Rocket (Blowing Rock), and the Avery Journal (Newland), all in western North Carolina from 1997 to 2002.  He enjoys painting, photography, fly fishing, golf and Carolina shag dancing.

Patsy Kelley Reading, White Breasted Nuthatch

Early years in the artistic-minded town of Sarasota, FL and an art scholarship to Stetson University influenced Patsy Kelley Reading to return from years of commercial art to become an acrylic wildlife artist in 1991.  The Erwin artist presently uses canvas, arches paper, eggs and gourds as the ground for her artwork.  Studying under the Tennessee artist, Urban Bird, led Patsy into watercolor to portray her birds and wildflowers.  It was his same influence that persuaded Patsy to add oils to her media and to branch into portraits.  Her art may be viewed at Watauga Valley Art League shows throughout Northeast Tennessee, and the Erwin Apple Festival.  The artist’s latest awards are two honorary awards at Newell-Hendershot Watermedia Exhibition in 2005 and the Merit Award at Summer Sycamore Shoals Art Show in Elizabethton in 2003.

Since then she has been using a digital camera and using photoshop to create her artwork.  She has taken classes in advanced black and white photography at University of Virginia’s College at Wise.  She has won several awards at local fairs including the Wise Fall Fling and Jenkins Days and has had prints displayed at the Reece Museum over the past two years.

Peggy Root, Jonesborough, Town Square

Peggy Root grew up in Florida and North Carolina. She studied at Ringling School of Art and Design, and studied figure painting and anatomy at Lyme Academy of Fine Art in Old Lyme, Connecticut.  She has spent the last 25 years painting the landscape of the Eastern United States.  She has had many solo exhibitions in the Northeast and South and has exhibited in numerous invitational group shows.  Her work can be purchased or viewed at Blue Spiral, in Asheville and at www.peggyroot.com

Tom Root, A Whirlwind of Leaves

In addition to being a painter, Tom Root is also a songwriter, musician, and a writer of children’s stories.  He studied drawing and painting at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut, under Aaron Shikler N.A. and Deane G. Joyce Samuel, Little Peony

Joyce Samuel’s love for painting began at an early age.  She won a scholarship to Chicago Art Institute in elementary school.  She has worked with all types of media throughout her life, but watercolor has become her passion.  In 1970 she moved to California and studied under Joe Garcia, Susan Clark, and Cloyd Bedke while managing her own business, a florist, antique and art emporium.  In 1998 she moved to Bristol and became a member of the Watauga Valley Art League, Bristol Art Guild, Kingsport Art Guild and the Arts Depot.

Steve Simmerman, K. Ray

Steve Simmerman grew up in Jonesborough and has worked as a graphic designer and instructor over the past fifteen years.  A graduate of ETSU, he completed an MFA at Savannah College of Art and Design.  Jacob Lawrence, Toulouse Lautree, and Edward Hoper are among some artists who influence his work.  He enjoys exploring the narrative qualities of advertising design through stylized illustration and hand lettering.   He currently resides in Charlotte, NC.  To see more of his work you can visit his website at www.stevesimmerman.com or at the Charlotte Art League.

Mike Smith, Johnson City, TN 2005

Mike Smith has been an ETSU Professor of Art since 1981.  He received his MFA from Yale University in 1981.  He received a TAC Artist Fellowship in 1992 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2001.He was the recipient of the Tennessee Governor’s Award in the Arts in 2001.  He also published a book,“You’re Not From Around Here,” in 2004.  His photographs are in numerous collections and museums, including Metropolitan Museum of Art and MOMA both in New York City, Whitney Museum of American Art and Art Institute of Chicago.  His photographs have been published in the New York Times Magazine, Wall Street Journal and the New Yorker.  His work may be seen and purchased at Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta, Yancey Richardson Gallery (www.yancyrichardsongallery.com) in New York City or online at www.leemarksfineart.com

Lewis A. Songer, White Bird, Yellow Sky

Lewis Songer retired from ETSU in 1999. Born in Evansville, IN, he holds degrees from Southern Illinois, Indiana University and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. His performed compositions include a symphony, a piano concerto, music for a ballet, music for the play The Lost State, produced at ETSU, and chamber works for wind quintet, brass choir, and horn ensembles. His latest composition was premiered in Austria.

Charles Sorrell, Buttercup

Charles Sorrell lives and works out of his home in Johnson City.  He has been an avid photographer for 30 years.  His main interest is in the natural world.

Laura Ann Sorrell, New Birth

Laura Ann Sorrell received a BFA in art education from the University of South Carolina with an emphasis in printmaking.  For the past 16 years she has taught private art lessons in Johnson City while pursuing color pencil drawing, printmaking (woodcut) and woodcarving as her media of choice.  She participates in area shows and exhibits in galleries. Sharon Squibb, I am Girl

Sharon Squibb teaches art at University School in Johnson City.  She worked in New York City for 11 years as a book editor, specializing in illustrated non-fiction books.  Originally from Sulpher Springs, she now resides in Jonesborough.  She is on the board of the Jonesborough Performing Arts Committee and performs in musical productions at the Jonesborough Repertory Theater.  She has a BFA from the University of Tennessee, an MFA from the University of Cincinnati, and a MAT from ETSU.  For an appointment to see more and/or purchase Sharon’s work call (423) 341-0130.

Jim Stagner, Flower Basket

Jim Stagner is a local artist that works with watercolor and oils and specializes in Marine art.  He is a member of the Watauga Valley Art League and The Roving Gallery. Nationally he is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists, the International Society of Marine Painters, the United States Coast Guard Art Program, the United States Park Service Artist, and Cape Lookout National Seashore.  Locally he has had instruction from Urban Bird and Polly Newell.  Nationally he has had instruction from Homer Hacker and Tom Lynch.  Some of the awards he has received are Best in Show Purchase Award in Carter County Scenes, Best of Show at Appalachian Fair for five years, United States Coast Guard Juried Show for seven years, and United States Coast Guard 2004 Best of Show George Gray Award.  He displays his art locally and nationally at Johnson City Municipal Building, SunTrust Banks, Unicoi County Heritage Museum, Pentagon in Washington D.C., Cape Look Out National Seashore, and many more.

John M. Steele, Mi Corason

John M. Steele was born in 1929 in Birmingham, Alabama. Professor Steele received his B.A.A. degree in industrial design from Auburn University. He then went on to receive his M.A. degree in design in 1953 from Louisiana State University.  He did post-graduate work in printmaking and the humanities at Florida State University from 1964-1965.  He was also one of four invited participants in a printmaking workshop with Arthur Deshales at Florida State in 1965.  He taught interior design and the history of architecture in the Department of Art at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and was an Assistant Professor of Drawing and Painting at Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, Mississippi, before coming to ETSU in 1956.  Along with teaching painting and printmaking, he also served as Assistant Chair of the Department of Art and Design.  He retired in 1994 and currently lives in Johnson City and pursues his own creative endeavors.

Denise Mayo Stewart-Sanabria, Meg Pretending to be Bored

Denise received her BFA in painting from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  She also attended the School of the Worcester Art Museum.  She lives in Knoxville and exhibits regularly throughout the southeast.  In the last year, she has received eight awards from various regional and national juried exhibits, including an award from Marc Pachter, Director of the National Portrait Gallery for a piece in Face Value, a national juried exhibit in Winston-Salem.  Denise is a past winner of the First Tennessee Bank show.  This year she will host an exhibit at the AVA Gallery in Chattanooga titled, The Human Presence.   Her artwork can also be viewed or purchased at the Hanson Gallery in Knoxville and 16 Patton in Asheville.

Sherre Sullivan, Pod

Sherre Sullivan is a freelance artist and drafting designer.  She received her MFA from ETSU and her BFA from Virginia Intermont College.  She works in several different media including oil, charcoal, pastel and tile mosaic.  Her latest projects include a 125’-0” sq. ft. tile mosaic as permanent art for the new Bristol Public Library and illustrations for a children’s book.  She is also working on a book about the design and assembly of the Bristol Library Mosaic.   She works as a designer with Gentech, a construction company in Abingdon, VA.  As a result of her love for nature she dedicates the creation of her artwork to the efforts of those who strive to preserve the natural environment.  Her artwork can be seen or purchased at the Bristol Public Library, St. Dominic’s Church in Kingsport, Eastman Business Center, and The Art Place in Chilhowie.

Mary Buckley Sutton, Minnie’s Minaudieve

Mary Buckley Sutton is originally from Alabama. She has degrees in history, education and art.  Combining her love of ribbons and flowers with her interest in fashion and art, she creates one-of-a-kind evening purses, hats, and shoes.   Ever evolving her passion for embellishment has taken yet another turn.  A Metal mesh tm bustier she designed graced the cover of Belle Armoire magazine in July 2005.  The piece is also a finalist in the fiber: wearable category in the 2006 Niche student awards competition sponsored by Niche Magazine from the Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft.  Her work may be viewed at www.shaposies.com or you may contact her at (423) 283-0277.

Kelly Swift, Song of Eight

Kelly Swift has always enjoyed doing art as far back as she can remember.  She took art classes all through high school and then went on to study art in college.  Since leaving college she discovered mixed media, altered art and book arts.  She is a member of the Watauga Valley Art League and currently resides in Piney Flats. Anne Gurney Thwaites, The Road Home V

Born in Baltimore, Anne Gurney Thwaites graduated from Emory & Henry College with a BA in English and Art.  There she studied with George Chavatel and Charles Goolsby.  She continued her education with classes from ETSU and numerous workshops.  For over 15 years, she has taught children’s after-school and summer art classes in Virginia and Tennessee.  In more recent years she has begun teaching adult classes as well, and is currently teaching several classes at the Kingsport Renaissance Center, including a class for the Senior Citizen Center.   Primarily an oil and acrylic painter, she focuses mainly on landscape.  She is also available for commission work in a variety of subjects.  Her work can be seen in local and regional juried shows where she has won numerous awards, including Second Place in the first Tennessee Bank Art Show in 2005.

Amie Tribble has been working with cross-stitch for seven years and enjoys various types of needlework.  She also enjoys crocheting and Celtic knot work.  She currently resides in Elizabethton.

Cindy Taylor Walton, Submerged (Series)

Originally from St. Petersburg, Florida Cindy Walton has currently resided in Ashville for the past 17 years.  Her art degrees are from Salem College and the University of North Carolina at Asheville.  She is the recipient of several art awards including the Eudora Anderson Collegiate Award at the Appalachian Art Show in Kingsport, Tennessee.  Her work is in a number of private collections and has been shown in several galleries and art centers including the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  She may be contacted at walmtn@bellsouth.net.

Irma P. Webb, Sign of Spring

 Irma P. Webb is a signature member of the Pastel society of America, NY.  She specializes in portrait painting and was commissioned to do official portraits of the mayor and county judges of Louisville, KY.  She has taught art classes in five states and has won awards in some juried shows including the N.J. National Miniature Exhibition, 69th Indiana Artists Exhibition, Virginia Highlands Festival, Tri-State Lincoln Day Show and the State Fair Art Exhibition in Louisville, KY where she won the grand prize twice.  She has presented numerous single and group shows.  Her artwork is on display at the Hibbert-Davis Coffee House in Kingsport.

Connie Werner, Silence in a Moment

Connie (Renfro) Werner was born in Spruce Pine, NC however at age 2 moved to the Limestone area with her parents where she grew up.  In 1995 she graduated from East Tennessee State University with a BS in Engineering and Design Graphics Technology.  She worked in various engineering type environments, but always found she was drawn back to her true love of the creative arts.  In 2002, after making the decision to become a stay at home mother, she began playing with painting oil portraits in her spare time.  Today she resides in Jonesborough, TN and has completed more than 200 portraiture related art projects.  She does most of her work by commission.  Her work is displayed in Pearl Gallery of fine arts Jonesborough, TN (423) 913-2531 where she is a volunteer helping to run the gallery.  You can see more of Connie’s work at  http://beernut.home.sprynet.com/.

Clair Van Wirt, Over the Runway at Mt. Air

Clair Van Wirt studied with various teachers in New Orleans including those at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art and presently with Urban Bird in Johnson City.  Portraits and landscapes in oil, gauche and watercolor are favorites.  Her work can be seen and purchased at Silent Poetry in Burnsville, NC and Pearls Gallery, Jonesborough, TN.

David Young, Lilies

David Young received his BA in art from Trinity University and his MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Georgia.  He has taught at the University of Georgia and the Interlochen Arts Academy and currently teaches drawing at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.  He has shown his paintings and drawings throughout the United States, including six venues as the Fay Gold Gallery in Atlanta, the Galveston Arts Center, the Apex Gallery in Washington, DC, the Artists Museum Gallery in Washington, DC, the McKinney Avenue Contemporary Gallery in Dallas, and the Hunter Museum of Art in Chattanooga. He has pieces in numerous public and private collections including A Gallery in Covington, LA, the Houston Museum of Fine Art, the Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, MA, the Houston Chronicle, Trinity University, Kenny Rogers and Rene Stout.

Shujun Zhou, Grapes

Shujun Zhou was born in Jiangsu province of China.  She graduated from Suzhou Railway Teacher College in 1996 with a BFA in fine arts education.  After graduation, she worked as a fine arts teacher in a middle school.  In 1998 she returned to school and studied at Nanjing Natural University receiving her MFA in 2001.  Shujun arrived in Johnson City in 2003.

Lalla Zima who now lives in Kingsport is a native of Georgia. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria. She works in many different media. Her paintings may be purchased at the Hibbert-Davis Coffee Gallery and Sharon Fine Gallery.
