After 20 years of teaching English to college students, Fran Rathburn began experimenting with handmade stone and mosaics.  Ten years later, she concentrates her artistic skills on traditional mosaics, which involve forming an image with small squares of tile or glass, as well as pique assiette, a French method that incorporates pottery, china, or other materials into a free-form pattern.  Favorite items to work with are old metal pieces, vintage garden implements, interesting boxes, trays, and frames.  New to her repertoire are vintage windows with intricate stained-glass designs that are glued onto the glass, then grouted.   She has taught mosaic classes at the former ETSU craft department, as well as for Arts Corp, a program that teaches the arts to underprivileged children, through the Johnson City Area Arts Council.  This past year, she had her first gallery show, “Backyards & Birdhouses,” at the JC Area Arts Council.  For information, contact her at verandagirl@embarqmail.com.

Stephen Simmerman, A Stand Up Guy

Originally from Jonesborough, TN, Steve Simmerman has worked as a graphic designer and college professor in a variety of southern locales over the past 20 years.  Steve is fascinated by the power of design in a cultural context; from the package design of cereal to the concert posters of regional bands to billboards dotting the landscape, type and image coalesce in a million diverse and provocative ways.  He feels art can be discovered in every realm of life, and imagery can often confront us, making us connect symbols with ideas.  Some of his favorite explorations involve thinking up fictional products and events; he then creates posters and “branding” for them in the tradition of the golden age of advertising.  Among Steve’s influences are Toulouse-Lautrec, Norman Rockwell, Edward Hopper, and Jacob Lawrence.  He’s also a huge fan of early American magazine illustrators like Edward Penfield and Will Bradley.  Having grown up sketching Superman from Action comics and copying the whimsical characters of Charles Schulz, Steve continues to find the synergy of word and image an engaging and limitless reservoir of expression. He currently resides in Chattanooga, TN.
